A Vision

Every fellowship begins with a vision of what God has called it to be. Spencer Baptist was born of such a vision.

Spencer was conceived in liberty and dedicated to the proposition that all people are equal at the foot of the cross. The question could have been asked as to the need of another church in a town that was only five years old and a population of only 1000. Methodist, Presbyterian and Baptist churches were already in existence. In face, Spindale Baptist Church (now First Baptist Church of Spindale) was a strong church with several hundred active members. However, its membership was dominated by business community leaders and upper management in textile mills. Mill workers felt as if they has little or no say in the affairs of their church.

The Beginning...

On April 11, 1926, a group of Baptist believers met in the old Spindale Company Store for the purpose of worship and discussion. At this service it was suggested that the group meet again the next Sundae for worship and for the establishment of a Baptist church. The meeting was held as planned and a new church was formed. What were their dreams? What hills where they trying to take?

There years of history has revealed something of their vision. They sought to lead people into a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ as their Lord and their Savior. The organization of the Sunday School was concurrent with the organization of the church itself. The purpose of the Sunday School was to be both the preaching and teaching arm of the church. Obviously the church followed its vision. Not only did the church experience rapid growth, it also distinguished itself as a church which sent its people out into full-time Christian service.

Foward Into the Future...

Now we have entered into a new millennium and we come once again to ask the why of our existence. In 1999, we began an ongoing process of re-visioning the church. We still believe that God has a purpose for us and that purpose is larger than any one of us can imagine.

This we know and have adopted as out motto: Where God Guides, God Provides. With that in mind, we walk into history for Christ. His story is our story.
